However, interest in academic archives from library leaders has not been enough to overcome the challenge of fickle allocation of resources.

The salaries from those unfilled positions may be used for other purposes or different positions, with the too-common reality that the salary line for an academic archivist disappears. At the other end of the spectrum, a large number of department heads, directors, and archivists in deanship roles have recently changed positions or retired.
